Why believe?

I would like to hear an explanation from religious people as to why they believe?  If you believe in a higher power, regardless of your religion, what makes you believe what you do?  Is it because of knowledge that you have obtained, your own life experiences, or have you just always believed without questioning it?  I would like to get into this topic more, but I would like to start off with the most general question before I go any deeper.
